Medical Astrology: Could Your Birth Chart Offer a New Perspective on Your Health?

Chelsey Gilbert LMT, Host of Transformative Talks and Owner of Transformative Wellness

When most people hear the word astrology, they think about personality traits, relationships, compatibility, or the daily horoscope they might scroll past online. But astrology has many different branches, and some go much deeper than describing who you are or how you interact with the world. One of the most fascinating—and often misunderstood—branches is medical astrology.

In a recent episode of Transformative Talks, I spoke with Eir Atla, a medical astrologer, medical intuitive, astro-herbalist, and former nurse. Our conversation opened the door to an entirely different way of viewing the birth chart: not as a diagnostic tool, but as a symbolic framework that may help us better understand our bodies, recognize patterns, and become more intentional about our health.

Medical astrology is a traditional practice that explores the possible connections between the planets, zodiac signs, astrological houses, and different areas or functions of the body. Historically, astrology and medicine were often studied together. Practitioners believed that understanding a person’s astrological makeup could offer clues about their natural constitution, areas of sensitivity, and the types of support that might help bring their system back into balance.

Today, medical astrology is considered a complementary or spiritual practice rather than a scientifically established form of healthcare. It should never be used to diagnose an illness, replace medical testing, or discourage someone from working with a qualified healthcare professional. However, it may offer another lens through which we can explore our habits, needs, and relationship with our bodies.

How Does Medical Astrology Work?

Medical astrology begins with your natal chart, which is calculated using the exact date, time, and location of your birth. While the same chart can be used to explore your personality, relationships, and life path, a medical astrologer examines it through a body-centered lens.

Within this system, each zodiac sign is traditionally associated with a particular area of the body. Aries is connected with the head, for example, while Pisces is associated with the feet. The signs move symbolically down the body, with each one representing different physical areas and functions.

The planets are also believed to carry their own qualities. Mars is traditionally associated with heat, action, inflammation, and acute experiences. Saturn represents coldness, restriction, structure, and conditions that may develop slowly over time. The Sun is connected with vitality, while the Moon is associated with fluids, cycles, nourishment, and emotional rhythms. Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter bring their own symbolic influences as well.

A medical astrologer looks at where these planets fall in the chart, the signs they occupy, the houses in which they are placed, and the relationships—or aspects—they form with one another. Rather than focusing on one placement in isolation, the goal is to understand how the different pieces interact.

This is important because astrology, much like the body, is layered. One placement may suggest heat while another brings a cooling influence. One may point toward expansion while another represents restriction. Looking at the chart as a whole may provide a more personalized picture than trying to apply one wellness protocol to everyone.

Moving Beyond the One-Size-Fits-All Approach

One of the ideas that stood out during my conversation with Eir was the reminder that every body is different. We often receive very generalized health advice: eat at certain times, follow a specific diet, exercise in a particular way, or create the same routine every day. These recommendations may work beautifully for some people, but they may leave others feeling frustrated, inconsistent, or as if they are somehow failing. Medical astrology offers a different question: What if your body is not designed to function exactly like everyone else’s?

During the episode, Eir briefly explored my chart through the lens of astro-nutrition. We discussed how my Cancer rising, Pisces placements, and Sagittarius sixth house could symbolically reflect my sensitivity, inconsistent appetite, intuitive relationship with food, and difficulty following rigid eating routines. Much of what she shared reflected patterns I had already noticed within myself. The reading did not diagnose a condition or give me a guaranteed solution. Instead, it offered language for experiences I was already having and encouraged me to become more curious about what my body had been communicating.

That is where a practice like medical astrology may be most helpful. It can encourage us to stop judging our bodies for not fitting into a prescribed box and begin observing them with more curiosity.

How Can Medical Astrology Support Your Health Journey?

A medical astrology reading may help identify areas of life or wellness that deserve greater awareness. Depending on the practitioner and type of reading, it may explore your energy levels, relationship with food, emotional patterns, stress responses, natural rhythms, or the environments in which you tend to feel most supported.

This information can become a starting point for reflection. You might begin tracking when your energy rises or falls, noticing which foods leave you feeling nourished, observing how emotions affect your digestion, or recognizing how particular environments influence your nervous system.

It may also help you develop better questions to bring to your healthcare providers. Medical astrology cannot tell you whether you have a deficiency, hormonal imbalance, autoimmune condition, or other medical issue. Only appropriate evaluation and testing can do that. However, if a reading draws your attention to a pattern, you can document what you are experiencing and discuss it with a qualified professional.

You might also use the information to support simple, low-risk practices such as journaling, improving sleep habits, becoming more consistent with hydration, creating a calmer environment around meals, or paying closer attention to your body’s signals. Any recommendation involving supplements, herbs, major dietary changes, or treatment decisions should be reviewed with an appropriate healthcare professional, especially if you have an existing condition or take medication.

Medical Astrology as a Tool for Body Awareness

For me, the most valuable part of this conversation was not the idea that our charts have all the answers. It was the invitation to become more aware of ourselves.

Body awareness is the ability to notice the sensations, patterns, and subtle changes happening within us. It helps us recognize when something feels supportive, when something feels off, and when it may be time to seek additional help. Medical astrology may offer another way to begin that conversation with your body.

Instead of asking, “What is wrong with me?” you might begin asking:

“What patterns keep repeating?”

“When do I feel most energized and supported?”

“How does my environment affect my physical and emotional health?”

“Am I following a wellness routine because it genuinely helps me, or because I have been told it is what I should do?”

“What has my body been trying to communicate that I have not yet slowed down enough to hear?”

These questions can be empowering because they move us away from frustration and toward curiosity. They remind us that health is not only about responding when something goes wrong. It is also about building a relationship with ourselves before we reach that point.

Your Chart Is a Starting Point, Not a Sentence

Medical astrology should never be used to predict that you will develop a particular condition or to create fear around your health. A birth chart is not a diagnosis, and no placement automatically means that something is destined to happen. Instead, the chart can be viewed as a symbolic map—one that may help you explore your natural tendencies, become more aware of potential patterns, and experiment with supportive practices in a thoughtful and responsible way.

Your body is constantly giving you information. Some messages are obvious, while others are much quieter. Medical astrology is one of many tools that may help you slow down, listen more intentionally, and see your experiences from a different perspective. It may not replace the answers found through medical care, but it could inspire new questions—and sometimes, asking a more meaningful question is the first step toward understanding yourself more deeply.
